Pick a Colour Palette for Your Home Interior
How to pick a colour palette
Choosing a colour pallette for your home’s interior can be quite difficult and stressful. Here we list some tips on how to choose paint colours for your home interior to help you in your journey towards a beautiful home.
Start with the largest room of your house
The largest area of the house is typically the living room or the kitchen. Start choosing a palette for this room and work your way from here. Generally, soft and neutral hues such as cream and beige go well with the main room. A soft and neutral colour palette offers sophistication and flexibility. It can serve as a blank canvas for modern and bolder colours for your furniture and decorations.
Develop your palette with the shades of the same hue
Once you have chosen a colour for the first room, it is recommended that the adjacent rooms possess a shade of the same hue. A new colour can be synthesised by mixing the same colour with varying amounts of white for a lighter shade. You may also opt to pick the colour next to it in the paint colour chart. The resulting colour scheme will then create harmony inside your home.
Choose light to dark colours from top to bottom
Use light valued colours for the ceiling, medium colours for the walls, and dark tones for the floor. This resembles the natural environment outside where you see the light sky, the green trees, and the dark ground. It is useful to note that colours found in nature also work well together when applied inside the house.
Use the colour wheel
A colour wheel is a helpful tool when choosing colour schemes for house interior. Complementary colours are located opposite to each other on the colour wheel. Examples of which are blue and orange, red and green, and purple and yellow. Analogous colours, on the other hand, are colours that are right beside each other on the colour wheel. For example, blue, blue-violet and violet are analogous colours that create a striking contrast when placed side by side.
Know the 60-30-10 rule
The 60-30-10 rule pertains to dividing the colours present in a space into 60 percent dominant colour, 30 percent secondary colour and 10 percent accent colour. Generally, the dominant colour goes to the walls, the secondary colour is for the furniture and upholstery, and the accent colour is dedicated to highlighting pieces such as throw pillows or a lampshade. This ratio works since it ensures that the colours are properly balanced. Moreover, using more than three colours tend to feel hectic and overwhelming.
Select colours that match your personal style
At the end of the day, it is still best to choose a colour palette based on your personal style. Doing this will show off your personality and in turn, create a unique space. The tips listed above on how to choose paint colours for your home can serve as your guide in decision-making; however, you will feel more at home when you choose colours that you love.
